BAM was founded in 1964 and is registered with the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia. Similar to other badminton associations, BAM has affiliations to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and the International Badminton Federation (IBF). Dato’ Sri Mohd Nadzmi bin Mohd Salleh has been serving as the BAM’s president since 2003 until now. Prior to the existence of BAM, there were already badminton associations in several states of Malaysia since the 1930s. Throughout history, the Malaysian badminton team has achieved considerable success, which is not surprising considering badminton is the second most popular sport in Malaysia after football. The Malaysian men’s team has won the prestigious Thomas Cup five times, most recently in the 1992 tournament which was held in Kuala Lumpur. However, despite having qualified for the Uber Cup numerous times, the Malaysian women’s team has not been as successful, reaching the quarter-finals only once in 2004, before eventually losing out to the Chinese team. Although BAM is Malaysia’s official badminton association, several players opt to stay independent for a myriad of reasons. For example, the men’s doubles pair Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif have left BAM in 2011, citing lack of tournament exposure by BAM. BAM has lately been frequently featured in the local news, but mostly for the wrong reasons. In early 2011, BAM was heavily criticized for preventing the better-ranked doubles pair Gan Teik Chai and Tan Bin Shen from participating in the World Championships. Then there is the long-running feud between BAM and the former national badminton coach Datuk Misbun Sidek which has yet to come to a conclusion. Currently, the 2012 London Olympics gold medal is BAM’s ultimate goal. However, the poor performances in the later part of 2011 by several Malaysian players have alarmed the BAM coaching committee.
